FEBRUARY'S FEATURED ARTISTS KPC and Kirkland Art Center are pleased to present the work of Michael Ottersen's painting class: 'Abstraction in Oil.' February 5-March 5 Many of these artists have been studying with Michael for years, and some have recently jumped aboard. These paintings by Glenda Guinn-Gilles, Erna Geirs, Anna Macrae, Amy Feron, Katy Foruria, Kirsten Kunhardt and Rochelle Dammel examine both the external world and the internal, personal world. By combining an exploration both painting techniques and contemporary painting, these artists have made work that is both exciting and informed.
Kirkland Arts Center has been fortunate to have Michael Ottersen as an instructor since 2001. In addition to teaching Abstraction in Oil, Michael also teaches Basic Oil Painting. He received his BFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, and was the recipient of an Artists Fellowship Grant in 2001. His work is represented in the collection of the University of Washington Medical Center and Pierogi Gallery, Brooklyn. He has taught painting and drawing at Pratt Fine Arts Center, Northwest College of Art, and North Seattle Community College.

NOVEMBER'S FEATURED ARTIST Julie Stonefelt November 1-30 Artist reception November 9, 6:30-8:00pm
Julie Stonefelt I began painting birds (feathers in particular) while I was working with injured and orphaned raptors in New York State. One morning I entered a recuperating red-tailed hawk’s cage and found one of her feathers on the floor. Turning the striped feather in my hand, I realized that each feather is a unique work of art - a reflection of the birds’ fierce spirit and way of being in the world. Since I could not keep those feathers, I began painting them in my field journal. This way I would always have a glimmer of the birds’ beauty with me.
Birds continue to fascinate me and the natural world will remain the foundation of my work. As I move forward I will be focusing on pen and ink field journal pieces and watercolor paintings of birds in their natural habitats. I will also be exploring new subject matter from nature while deepening my understanding of color and experimenting with new artistic techniques to help people connect with wild beauty.
