Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra presents...
If you don’t know Christian McBride, prepare yourself for a new favorite jazz artist. Virtuoso bassist Christian McBride is a leading figure on today’s international jazz stage and a dominant contributor to the New York jazz scene, performing with such groups as Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center and the bands of Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, and Chick Corea, plus his own fabulous trio that has repeatedly thrilled audiences at sold-out concerts in Seattle. A four-time GRAMMY winner, McBride appears on more than 300 recordings as a sideman or bandleader. With a career blazing into its third decade, McBride now appears on the syndicated radio show, “Jazz Night in America,” featured every Friday night on National Public Radio (heard locally at 88.5 FM).
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear McBride lead the SRJO and share his favorite big band music with Seattle audiences, paying tribute to his own mentors and the greatest bass players in the history of jazz: Oscar Pettiford, Ray Brown, Jimmy Blanton, Charles Mingus and more.
The award-winning, 17-piece Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (SRJO) is the Northwest’s premier big band jazz ensemble, co-directed by drummer Clarence Acox, nationally recognized director of bands at Seattle’s Garfield High School, and saxophonist/arranger Michael Brockman, long-time faculty member at the University of Washington School of Music.
The ensemble includes many of the region’s best-loved jazz soloists and bandleaders, and their extensive and growing repertoire is drawn from the 100-year history of jazz, from turn-of-the-20th century ragtime to turn-of-the-21st century avant-garde.
Recently, the cities of Seattle and Kirkland and the state of Washington proclaimed October 4th “Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Day” in honor of the organization’s achievements. Their newest compact disc, “Benny Carter’s Kansas City Suite,” which features narration from Clarence Acox and a performance by the late Hadley Caliman, was released in November 2014 and has already achieved wide sales throughout the region.
