School Matinees
Francisco is the son of Mexican migrant farmers, and is just starting the first grade. Because he doesn’t speak English and can’t understand his teacher, Francisco finds himself drawn to the caterpillar that lives in a jar near his desk. Entranced by the caterpillar’s transformative powers, Francisco draws a picture of what he imagines it will look like when it finally bursts from its cocoon. Follow Francisco on this journey from isolation and confusion to freedom and friendship. This autobiographical story is presented bilingually, celebrating the many forms of self-expression. Spanish and English are woven together as Book-It’s signature style maintains much of the narration in this adaptation of La Mariposa.
