SCROLL DOWN FOR OUR 2009-2010 WORLD OF ARTS PROGRAM UPDATE!

Kirkland Performance Center’s A World of Arts Educational Outreach Program brings our acclaimed touring artists into classrooms for in-depth, hands-on workshops and interactive assemblies, reaching more than 3,000 students each school year.   That’s right, we bring the artists, to YOU!  Through our World of Arts outreach program we are taking a leadership role in utilizing the Washington State Learning Standards – the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR’s) in our programming choices and materials. The program’s objectives are:

  • To provide arts education experiences in a full range of performing arts disciplines to local students of all ages
  • To give students and teachers the opportunity to interweave these experiences into lesson plans that fit their curriculum
  • To inspire students to apply arts learning principles to other academic areas.

This year we are offering a wide range of cultural and performance-oriented opportunities for your students. Check out our A World of Arts list below, if you would like to bring any of these artists to your school for a workshop or assembly please fill out the form on the bottom of the page and we will contact you with details. To sign up online click here.

Master Throat Singers from Tuva

Chirgilchin
Date: Friday, October 2, 2009
Time: 10:00 am
Price: $200
Grade: 3-9

Atmospheric and mesmeric, ‘throat singing’ is almost too difficult to describe in words. It must be heard to be believed – the music, produced by resonating low sounds in the throat, creates a middle note and a haunting, flute-like harmonic.

Chirgilchin is a group of musicians from Tuva, a small Russian province north of Western Mongolia. Singing the ancient folk songs in the Tuvan language, the group also plays hand made instruments.

Umalali: The Garifuna Women's Project
Date: Monday February 8, 2010
Time:10:30 am or 1:30 pm
Price: $200

Rooted in sacred ancestral spirit possession and pulsating African rhythms,  the music of Umalali ("voice" in Garifuna) celebrates the cultural hybrid of Africans deposited in the New World, creating their own distinct culture from their combined indigenous and African roots. The Garifuna evolved as a distinct people from Africans shipwrecked off the coast of St Vincent's (1635) who survived and inter-married with the local  Arawak and Caribe Indians.  Women play a key role in nurturing and sustaining cultural traditions: the Garifuna women in Umalali have united to craft contemporary songs of indescribable soul, strength and beauty. Blending the rich vocal textures of rock, blues, funk, African, Latin and Caribbean influences, Umalali tells the story of women whose strength, hard work and perseverance provide the bedrock of their community.
