Experience a fusion of literature and original music! Bushwick Book Club Seattle and KPCU present a creative twist on an author series: live performances of brand-new songs inspired directly by the featured book.
Authors will join musicians onstage to discuss their work, their creative process, and the music it inspired. Following the performance, the audience is invited to join a lively Q&A with both author and musicians.
This event can be enjoyed without reading the book, but if you’d like to read the story before seeing the show, check out your local bookstore or the King County Library!

FEBRUARY 12: Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton
One pet crow fights to save humanity from an apocalypse in this uniquely hilarious debut from a genre-bending literary author.
S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle’s wild crows (those idiots), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos®.
Then Big Jim’s eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to feel like something isn’t quite right. His most tried-and-true remedies—from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim’s loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis—fail to cure Big Jim’s debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he discovers that the neighbors are devouring each other and the local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle. Humanity’s extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow whose knowledge of the world around him comes from his TV-watching education.
The Hollow Kingdom is a humorous, big-hearted, and boundlessly beautiful romp through the apocalypse and the world that comes after, where even a cowardly crow can become a hero.
MARCH 25: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
The Art of Racing in the Rain is a heartfelt story about love, loyalty, and the unbreakable connection between a dog and his human. Told through the soulful perspective of Enzo, it follows a family’s joys and heartbreaks while celebrating the everyday courage it takes to weather life’s storms. At its core, the book is about hope, resilience, and the belief that with patience, compassion, and a little faith, we can all learn to “race in the rain” and find our way forward.
JUNE 23: Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen.
However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners and a different kind of resolve.

What is Bushwick Book Club?
The Bushwick Book Club Seattle is a group of musicians dedicated to sharing our combined passion for both music and reading with the Seattle community and beyond. With each performance, a book is chosen which is read by our talented Bushwick artists who then write original music inspired by the book they just read. The audience is encouraged to read the featured book and participate in the events as well. By producing these unique, one-of-a-kind musical literary events, we hope to increase awareness in literature and songwriting, while at the same time reminding people (young and old) that reading can and should be a regular part of their daily lives.
