Description

The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra welcomes back a full audience (with no seating restrictions) for Tia Fuller with SRJO. We will be joined by international saxophone star Tia Fuller in back-to-back concerts on Saturday, June 18, 2022 (7:30 PM) in the Ilsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya, and Sunday, June 19, 2022 (2:00 PM) at the Kirkland Performance Center. The concerts will include stunning selections from her acclaimed album Diamond Cut such as “Save Your Love for Me,” “Queen Intuition,” and “I Love You,” plus other favorite pieces featuring the soprano or alto saxophone with big band.

Fuller is a force to be reckoned with in the worlds of jazz, pop, R&B and more, and has toured the world in the band of celebrated singer Beyoncé, has performed a concert for President Barack Obama at the White House, and has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Oprah, and the Grammy Awards. A faculty member at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Fuller is the featured saxophonist heard in the Pixar film “Soul” as the character Dorothea Williams.

Tia is one of those solid, dedicated artists whose career has been steadily building for decades. If she isn’t already one of your favorite saxophonists, she soon will be,” says SRJO Co-Artistic Director, Michael Brockman.

SRJO’s weekend of concerts is presented in celebration and recognition of Juneteenth, the annual event that since 2021 is officially recognized as a national holiday. The concerts will include statements from the stage about the importance of the holiday and its meaning in our American culture that is the birthplace of jazz as a musical art form.

As an added attraction, SRJO brings back its popular tradition of inviting several “rising star” seniors from award-winning high school band programs to join us on stage to strut their stuff!

Tickets to attend the concerts in-person are $60 and are on sale now at www.srjo.org/tickets. Electronic tickets for viewing the June 19 concert online via livestream are $30 and can also be purchased at www.srjo.org/tickets. All ticketholders (of either type) can access a “video-on-demand” recording of the concert for one week beginning Tuesday, June 21.

Artist Bio

The award-winning, 17-piece Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (SRJO) is the Northwest’s premier big band jazz ensemble, co-directed by drummer Clarence Acox, nationally recognized director of bands at Seattle’s Garfield High School, and saxophonist/arranger Michael Brockman, long-time faculty member at the University of Washington School of Music.

The ensemble includes many of the region’s best-loved jazz soloists and bandleaders, and their extensive and growing repertoire is drawn from the 100-year history of jazz, from turn-of-the-20th century ragtime to turn-of-the-21st century avant-garde.

Recently, the cities of Seattle and Kirkland and the state of Washington proclaimed October 4th “Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Day” in honor of the organization’s achievements. Their newest compact disc, “Benny Carter’s Kansas City Suite,” which features narration from Clarence Acox and a performance by the late Hadley Caliman, was released in November 2014 and has already achieved wide sales throughout the region.
