Al Stewart Brings His 80th Birthday Farewell Tour Home to the West Coast

After sold-out farewell shows across the East Coast, Amsterdam, and the UK — capped by a triumphant night at the London Palladium and closing dates in Glasgow, Belfast, and Dublin — AlStewart isn’t quite done saying goodbye. This spring, the tour finally comes to the coast he called home for 45 years.

Beginning April 30 in Phoenix, a short drive from his new home in Chandler, Arizona, Stewart and his longtime band The Empty Pockets will wind through California, Oregon, and Washington on a run of shows concluding May 23. They’re joined by contemporary jazz saxophonist Chase Huna, whose sax and flute work has become a signature of Al‘s live shows. For West Coast audiences, this is the farewell. “I can still see doing occasional shows here and there,” Stewart says, “but as for the long tours in faraway places, this is it.”

Stewart came up in the legendary London folk revival of the 1960s, sharing a flat with a young Paul Simon, working with Yoko Ono before she met John Lennon, and playing the very first Glastonbury Festival in 1970. He built a career on fusing folk-rock with richly detailed historical storytelling — digging, by his own account, into the same library stacks as historian Barbara Tuchman as often as the record stacks of rockers like Eddie Cochran. That approach produced 19 studio albums between his 1967 debut Bedsitter Images and 2008’s Sparks of Ancient Light, along with the 2009 live album Uncorked with Dave Nachmanoff — and two Platinum landmarks, Year of the Cat (1976) and Time Passages (1978).

Expect the songs that defined him — “Year of the Cat,” “Time Passages,” “On the Border,” “Modern Times” — alongside deep cuts from a catalogue spanning nearly six decades. In Stewart‘s own words: “I’m just a folk singer that is interested in history and wine that got lucky with some hit records! It’s as simple as that really.”

Don’t miss his final West Coast farewell.
